Peter Martin Demands New Rangers Probe Following Contentious Motherwell Game Scandal
Peter Martin claims that after the 2-2 draw with Motherwell, Rangers might be the focus of a second SFA probe.
The Gers were eager to go back to winning ways when they took the pitch at Fir Park on Sunday, 29 December, after losing 2-1 to St Mirren the weekend before.
Apostolos Stamatelopoulos gave Motherwell the lead after 16 minutes, although replays showed that Robin Propper’s header struck the forward’s hand during the build-up.
Martin, a PLZ Soccer writer, believes that more investigation could be required in light of what transpired during the Scottish League Cup final against Celtic. “I think there might be another investigation coming up,” he said.
Because of SFA, Philippe Clement can lose his Rangers job. Clement was able to witness his hope being crushed after battling to remain at Ibrox during the season. The Light Blues are now further behind Celtic in the Scottish Premiership, and if there was any possibility of a comeback in the second half of the season, it’s time to quit up.
Tawanda Maswanhise struck the game-winning goal in the 35th minute at Fir Park after more terrible Rangers defence allowed the attacker to pick up a loose ball and blast past Jack Butland. Pulling two goals back did not even partially mend the fractures. Let’s be sensible. However, attention will turn to the contentious circumstances surrounding the first goal and the VAR officials’ choice to say nothing in response to the blatant handball.
Alan Muir and Frank O’Connor were fired from their positions as SPFL referees when Vaclav Cerny denied a penalty in the League Cup final, and the Gers’ supporters will undoubtedly demand the same punishment. Although Stamatelopoulos’ hand was tucked beneath his body as the ball made contact, the deflection travelled directly to Motherwell’s first goal, raising questions over whether play should have been stopped. In any event, Hamza Igamane received a portion of the prize money for his brace in the second half, but Clement won’t be too concerned because he might be departing Ibrox after losing again.
