Ricky Carmichael Fires Back at Claims Eli Tomac is Better: “Our Era Built the Skills, Not the Tech”
Ricky Carmichael Fires Back at Fans After Eli Tomac Breaks His St. Louis Record
The motocross world lit up with debate after Eli Tomac broke Ricky Carmichael’s long-standing record at the St. Louis Triple Crown event. While many celebrated Tomac’s achievement, some fans went as far as declaring him the “greatest of all time,” surpassing Carmichael. The GOAT himself, however, wasn’t about to let those comments slide without adding his perspective.
Carmichael, widely regarded as the most dominant motocross rider in history, responded to the buzz with pointed remarks during a recent interview. He didn’t shy away from addressing the fans who were quick to crown Tomac as the new standard-bearer.
Carmichael began by acknowledging Tomac’s incredible talent and work ethic, stating:
“Eli’s a phenomenal rider, and I have all the respect in the world for him. What he’s achieved is nothing short of amazing, but you’ve got to look at the full picture when comparing eras.”
Carmichael emphasized how advancements in technology have reshaped the sport. Modern bikes, he noted, have significantly improved suspension, electronics, and overall performance, which provide today’s riders with an edge that wasn’t available during his time.
“Back in my era, we didn’t have the luxury of bikes that practically do half the work for you. You had to rely on pure grit, endurance, and technique. Don’t get me wrong, today’s riders are incredibly skilled, but the bikes have leveled the playing field in ways people don’t realize.”
Carmichael also highlighted the contributions his generation made to the sport, particularly in terms of evolving riding techniques.
“The techniques that are standard now? They were born in my era. Scrubbing, cornering speed, body positioning—those were innovations we brought to the table. Riders today are building on a foundation we laid down.”
He went on to stress that comparing riders across different eras is inherently flawed.
“It’s like comparing Michael Jordan to LeBron James. They’re both incredible athletes, but they played in different times, with different challenges. The same goes for motocross.”
Despite his firm stance on the importance of context in these debates, Carmichael didn’t downplay Tomac’s record-breaking performance.
“I’m not here to take anything away from Eli. Breaking records is hard, no matter what era you’re in. He deserves all the accolades he’s getting.”
Carmichael’s response has sparked even more discussion in the motocross community, with fans on both sides debating the merits of his arguments. While some agree that technological advancements make direct comparisons unfair, others argue that records speak for themselves, regardless of the circumstances.
As for Carmichael, he’s content letting his legacy speak for itself.
“At the end of the day, records are meant to be broken. But being the greatest isn’t just about numbers—it’s about what you leave behind for the next generation. And I’m proud of the mark I’ve made on this sport.”
One thing is certain: the rivalry between eras is as fierce as the battles on the track. And while the GOAT debate may never truly be settled, Carmichael’s legacy as a trailblazer and innovator in motocross remains as solid as ever.
Eli Tomac’s achievements are undoubtedly monumental, and his career continues to inspire a new generation of riders. But Ricky Carmichael’s contributions to the sport go beyond wins and records—they represent the evolution of motocross itself. Perhaps the debate isn’t about who’s better, but about celebrating the greatness of both riders and what they’ve brought to the sport we all love.
