Ricky Carmichael and Ryan Villopoto Analyze Eli Tomac’s Start at Anaheim: Why the Inside Line Might Be Key
Eli Tomac entered Anaheim with the spotlight firmly fixed on him, and for good reason. As one of the most consistent and dominant riders in the sport, expectations were high. However, his start in the season opener left much to be desired, prompting motocross legends Ricky Carmichael and Ryan Villopoto to dissect what went wrong and offer some pointed advice.
Anaheim’s start gate is notorious for its unpredictability. Tomac found himself starting from a mid-to-outer position, which left him boxed in by aggressive competitors looking to claim the holeshot. This positioning forced Tomac into a compromised trajectory, struggling to carve out a clean line. As a result, he quickly fell behind, creating a deficit that even his world-class speed couldn’t completely overcome.
Carmichael, often referred to as “The GOAT” of motocross, was quick to point out that Tomac’s starting gate selection was a critical factor. “Eli is one of the best riders in the field, but when you’re not positioned correctly off the start, even the fastest guy can be neutralized,” Carmichael noted during the race analysis. “He left himself too vulnerable to being pinched on the outside.”
Ryan Villopoto, a multi-time champion who understands the mental and strategic aspects of Supercross, agreed with Carmichael but went a step further. “If I were in Eli’s shoes, I’d be looking at that inside gate. Sure, it’s a bit riskier in terms of tight spacing, but it gives you the advantage of dictating the first corner. From the inside, you control the line, not the other way around.”
Villopoto elaborated on the benefits of starting further inside: “It’s all about minimizing variables. Out wide, you’re gambling—guys can cut in on you, and you’re fighting for the same real estate. Inside, you might have less space, but you’re in charge of your own fate entering that first corner.”
For Tomac, starting further inside could provide a much-needed edge. The tighter line would allow him to focus on a smoother, controlled entry into the first turn, reducing the likelihood of being crowded or pushed into a less favorable line. This shift could also play to his strength: his ability to maintain momentum through technical sections of the track.
Carmichael highlighted the importance of adapting, especially for a seasoned veteran like Tomac. “Eli’s been doing this long enough to know how quickly things can change. The ability to analyze and adjust is what separates the greats from the legends.”
While Tomac’s rough start at Anaheim didn’t derail his night entirely, it served as a reminder that even the best riders must constantly evaluate their strategy. Both Carmichael and Villopoto agree that taking a closer look at his gate selection and considering the benefits of starting further inside could pay dividends for the rest of the season.
For fans, Tomac’s journey continues to be a masterclass in resilience and adaptability. The next round will undoubtedly be an opportunity for him to prove that even after a tough start, he can rise to the challenge—and perhaps this time, from the inside gate.
