Celtic make enquiry to Ajax for Dutch international defender, club open to offers

It’s no secret that Celtic is looking for a left-back this summer because Brendan Rodgers needs Greg Taylor to have competition.

With Alexandro Bernabei away on loan in Brazil, the only backup available to the Scotland international at the moment is the untested Matthew Anderson.

It’s a top priority as the transfer window closes, and despite the club being connected to players like Hugo Bueno and Owen Beck, nothing concrete has been accomplished.

Celtic’s attention is now being piqued by another name as the Bhoys look to Eredivisie powerhouse Ajax for motivation.

Owen Wijndal is of interest to Celtic.
According to Sky Sports, the Dutch team has received preliminary queries from Werder Bremen and Celtic over defender Owen Wijndal.

The player, who played on loan at Royal Antwerp in Belgium during the previous season, is reportedly receptive to offers from Ajax.

Since Wijndal has a contract with his current club through 2027, it’s possible that Celtic is using a loan-to-buy scenario, but overall, this is a positive development for a position that the Bhoys desperately need.

The current career of Wijndal
The left-back played 143 games in total for AZ Alkmaar, where he made his senior debut. A stellar 2021–2022 season that produced 12 assists made Ajax aware of his potential.

After that, they reached an agreement on an £8.5 million contract for the player, who made 32 appearances before moving to Belgium on loan.

He gained international prominence for his performance at AZ Alkmaar as well, earning 11 caps for the Netherlands in 2020 and 2021.

He made 40 appearances for Antwerp last season, including six starts in the Champions League group stages, when he helped the team defeat Barcelona 3-2 on the last day of play.

With just two weeks left in the transfer window, Wijndal has a great profile and will undoubtedly be coming in to immediately challenge for Taylor’s spot in the starting eleven. This will be an exciting tale to follow.
