Ryan Villopoto Responds to Whether Eli Tomac Will Be the Only Rider to Win for 11 Straight Years in 450SX

Eli Tomac continues to make history in the sport of Supercross. At 31 years old, the Monster Energy Yamaha Star Racing rider has not only defied expectations by returning from injury but has also become the oldest points leader in 450SX history. His consistency and dominance over the past decade have sparked discussions about whether he will be the only rider in history to win races for 11 straight years in the premier class. Among those weighing in is four-time Supercross champion Ryan Villopoto.

Villopoto’s Perspective on Tomac’s Longevity

Villopoto, who retired from professional racing in 2015 after an illustrious career, was recently asked about Tomac’s historic streak and whether any future rider could replicate such longevity in 450SX. His response was a mix of admiration and realism.

“Eli has shown an insane level of consistency, and I don’t think people understand how difficult it is to keep winning year after year, especially in the 450 class. Injuries, bike changes, competition—it all plays a role. What he’s doing is special,” Villopoto said.

Villopoto acknowledged that Supercross is more physically and mentally demanding than ever. Riders are pushing the limits, and with so much young talent emerging, maintaining a championship-contending level for over a decade is a challenge few can handle.

“To see Eli leading the points at 31 and still as fast as he was years ago, that’s crazy. I’m not saying no one will ever do it again, but I think it’s highly unlikely. The sport is just too brutal,” he added.

What Makes Tomac Different?

Tomac’s career longevity can be attributed to several factors:

  • Adaptability: Over his career, Tomac has transitioned through different manufacturers—starting with Honda, dominating with Kawasaki, and now thriving with Yamaha.
  • Physical Conditioning: Despite injuries, Tomac has consistently maintained peak physical fitness, allowing him to stay competitive longer than most riders.
  • Mental Resilience: Unlike many riders who face burnout, Tomac seems to thrive under pressure, using setbacks as motivation to return stronger.

Villopoto emphasized how rare this level of consistency is. “It’s not just about talent. You have to stay healthy, motivated, and be willing to evolve. Tomac is doing that, and that’s why he’s still winning.”

Will We Ever See Another Rider Win for 11 Straight Years?

When asked if any upcoming rider has the potential to replicate Tomac’s feat, Villopoto was hesitant. “Maybe someone will come along with that kind of dominance, but it’s hard to say. The level of competition now is unreal. Look at how deep the field is. Every year, there are five or six guys who can win races.”

With the emergence of young talents like Jett Lawrence, Chase Sexton, and Haiden Deegan, the future of Supercross is promising. However, the question remains whether any of them can sustain a decade-long streak of victories like Tomac.

Tomac’s Legacy Grows

As the 2024 Supercross season progresses, Tomac’s legacy only continues to grow. If he secures another championship or extends his win streak further, it will be nearly impossible to argue against his place among the greatest riders of all time. Villopoto, for one, believes that regardless of what happens next, Tomac’s impact on the sport is already cemented.

“He’s a legend. Whether he wins another title or not, he’s set a standard that’s going to be tough for anyone to reach,” Villopoto concluded.

For now, the focus remains on whether Tomac can add yet another title to his already historic career. With the way he’s riding, few would bet against him.
