In the last weeks of the summer transfer season, a number of clubs are keeping an eye on Mikey Johnston’s circumstances at Celtic.

Remarkably, the winger is currently in his ninth season as a senior Bhoys player, having made his debut in 2017 during Brendan Rodgers’ initial tenure at the team.

He has undoubtedly experienced ups and downs. There have been devastating injuries, along with bursts of skill mixed with a lack of consistency in a Celtic shirt.

He’s had loan stints in Portugal and most notably with West Bromwich Albion in recent seasons. With seven goals in the second half of the previous season, Johnston flourished for the Baggies, raising his profile and asset worth.

In any case, he continues to be a member of Rodgers’ bench or rotation option, seldom appearing in the starting lineup.

Mikey Johnston will probably go elsewhere to play regular football.

When asked about his future on Friday, the Celtics manager hinted that he would be leaving, saying at a press conference held by Celtic FC: Regarding the current state of affairs, I’m available. We have a terrific relationship and communicate freely because I played Mikey and gave him his debut when he was eighteen.

“Mikey, I believe he’s reached a point where he’ll likely want to play more. However, he put in a lot of work during the preseason and placed himself in a strong position.

“We’ll see what happens over the next few weeks, but some clubs have expressed interest in him.

“He won’t be available for the weekend,” Rodgers confirmed. He will shortly return to the training group. He experienced a minor issue with one of his eye sockets located a little further back in his face, but he should recover quickly.

Teams may approach him to sign him, so everyone will be crossing their fingers that the injury doesn’t affect Rodgers’ ability to transfer to another team, should that be his ultimate decision about his future.
