Eli Tomac Fires Back at Claims That Haiden Deegan is Better Than His Younger Self
The motocross world thrives on debates and comparisons, and the latest topic sparking controversy involves none other than Eli Tomac and Haiden Deegan. As the young phenom continues to make waves in the sport, some fans and analysts have begun arguing that Deegan is already better than Tomac was at a similar stage in his career. However, Tomac isn’t having any of it.
During a recent interview, Tomac was asked about the comparisons between his younger self and Deegan, who has been lauded for his aggressive style and early success in the 250SX class. The multi-time champion didn’t hesitate to respond.
“I respect what Haiden is doing. He’s got talent, no doubt, but to say he’s better than I was at that age? I don’t know about that,” Tomac stated. “People forget the kind of battles I was in early in my career, the learning curve I went through, and what it took to get to the top.”
Tomac, who burst onto the professional motocross scene in 2010 by winning his very first professional race at Hangtown, quickly established himself as a force to be reckoned with. His mix of speed, technical skill, and endurance set him apart from his competitors early on. Deegan, at just 18 years old, has shown similar flashes of brilliance, but Tomac believes experience plays a major role in determining greatness.
“There’s a lot that goes into being an all-time great rider. I’ve won championships, battled legends, and adapted to different generations of racing. Haiden’s on the right path, but he’s got a long way to go before people start making those claims,” Tomac added.
The debate is a testament to Deegan’s rapid rise in the sport, as well as Tomac’s incredible legacy. While comparisons between eras are inevitable, only time will tell if Deegan can match or surpass the career achievements of a rider as decorated as Eli Tomac.
For now, Tomac remains focused on his own path, proving why he is one of the greatest riders in motocross history, while Deegan continues to carve out his own legacy. Regardless of who comes out on top in the long run, fans of the sport can enjoy the rise of a new star while still appreciating the dominance of an all-time great.
